Life has been crazy lately.  I just took the GRE last Friday, and I’ve been finishing up my applications to graduate school.  Under the added recent pressures my boyfriend and I ended up eating more takeout than usual. Since I … Continue reading

Correct nutrition information?

I overreacted the other day to an article posted on Twitter® from @DietitianOnline- article ‘Think Again, Dagwood: Cut Calories on your Sandwich‘ by Dan Naumovich. While my outcry against @DietitianOnline was over the top and unjustified (I apologize!), the article actually … Continue reading

Cupcake Crazed

Have you noticed the cupcake craze?  Everywhere I go I see something–a new street vendor, bake sale, store window, or even journal cover – cupcake.  Looking back the cupcake trend started a few years ago by now household names like the West Village’s Magnolia Bakery ™  and Beverly Hill’s Sprinkles Cupcake ™ .  As our world becomes more engulfed in cupcakes it is hard not to think of them as an everyday treat.  Tempting as cupcakes may be, they are not meal replacements.  Packed with simple sugars and saturated fats instead of complex carbohydrates, heart healthy fats and proteins, cupcakes are calorie-dense but nutrient-poor once-in-while desserts. In other words, the sugar in 1 average cupcake is equivalent to the amount of sugar in 1 regular soda.

I must confess.  I love sweets. I know I cannot let my sweet tooth guide me. So, what are my rules to navigate the land o’ cupcakes?

However, when you do decide to indulge, take a moment and savor it.

Greek yogurt, what’s the magic?

I simply love the stuff.

Greek yogurt has become a staple in my refrigerator.  I’m continually finding more ways to use and enjoy it.  I’m not the only one who’s just on the Greek yogurt bandwagon.  I’m sure you’ve noticed more and more yogurt brands popping out their own version.  So, what’s the magic behind the Greek yogurt?

Greek yogurt is a strained yogurt, and actually is nothing  new.  Strained yogurt has used in Eastern Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian cooking for years.  It’s made by straining out some of the whey (the liquid part) from regular yogurt.  Straining the yogurt leaves it smooth and thick, with a slightly sour taste.  Ok, seemingly less magical.

Greek yogurt’s popularity (and maybe the ‘magic’) is attributed to its nutritional content.  It’s an excellent source of calcium, protein, and probiotics (healthy gut bacteria that are thought to improve health).  In fact, Greek yogurt can contain up to 3 times more protein than regular yogurt, depending on the brand. Translation: one serving of Greek yogurt could contain up to 20 – 30% of your daily protein needs.

You could try: adding Greek yogurt instead of regular yogurt to your smoothie, or to your baked potato instead of sour cream, or mix it with whole grain cereal for a power-packed protein breakfast or snack.  You might find a delicious new treat.  There are also a large variety of flavors to taste.  Currently, my favorites are the 0% fat blueberry, or honey Chobani ™ yogurts, and plain Total 0% fat Fage ™ Greek yogurt!  So, Greek yogurt may not be “magical,” but it is a very good thing.  It is clear my love for Greek yogurt is far over.  I’m continually looking for new flavors and recipes using this tasty stuff.  How do you like your Greek yogurt?

Inspired to blog

strawberry picking

I’ve contemplated entering the blogging world for quite some time. I’m inspired by some of my favorite blogs, written by both professional bloggers Nutrition Blog Network and my close friends PeaceLoveandFood and colleagues JugglingwithJulia. Finally, one of my best friends, Orianna convinced me to collaborate with her. At first, I was skeptical; I work full-time, volunteer,  and I am applying to graduate school… in addition to several other professional projects I am working on.

Ori pointed out to me, as dietitians we are forever being asked some variation of “what should I eat/drink to lose/maintain/gain weight?” We also realized that many people who are interested in this type of information are like us—busy, working professionals juggling work, family/relationships, and their social lives while trying to maintain their sanity- and their waistline! We wanted a way to bring our knowledge, strategies, and resources to busy folks like ourselves and thus our blog – Spoon Fork Dietitians – was born!
